Look over the Edge

"He didn't think the odds applied to him. We were always trying to pull him back from the edge" (Krakauer 109).

Inspiration or Fool?

This quote about Chris McCandless could be argued that it shows him as a fool or as an inspiration. It could be said that it shows the foolishness in his "care free" and "head in the clouds" attitude. Because he had this attitude he was careless, and lead himself to the short life. However, in spite of his care free way, he found a perspective in his life that lead to a "full" and quality life. He wasn't bound by the stress of paying loans, paying bills, making it to work on time, and any other common stresses. He was able to see life for what it is. Beautiful. Something many people miss out on. Chris spent his happiest days wandering the US, seeing beautiful sights many eyes miss out on.
He experienced a way of life most people are denied because they have been caught in the all too familiar "9 to 5" life style. Chris inspired me to take time after high school dedicated to being able to see life form a carefree perspective, before I hop back into the familiar life style.

Entry #2

Outgrowing Your Guardian Angel

"He's out there somewhere, and I'd want someone to look after him like I tried to look after Alex" (Krakauer 43).

The Dynamics of Family

Many people look to their parents for advice on major discisions in their life, for a strong portion of their life. Our parents are supposed to be there for us to show us how to function as people, how to get back up when we fall, and help guide us when we are lost. However there comes a time when we outgrow these "guardian angels." Now, this isn't to say we'll never look to our parents for help, its just means well seek the help of other "guardian angels' in our life. Even when we don't go seeking them, they manage to find us. For example, Chris McCandless outgrew the the "guardian angels" in his parents rather fast, and for a some time was "angel-less." Until he found an "angel" in Jan Burres and her boyfriend Bob. They were there for Chris when he needed help, and offered help even when Chris thought he didn't need it. Jan was there to guide Chris, something she hoped someone else would do for her child. But she is proof, that "guardian angels" have a way of finding people who need them.
